HUS informs: HUS laboratories will increase the number of bookable appointments after summer

HUS Diagnostic Center aims to increase the number of booked appointments to 70% of all visits. The wish for more bookable appointments was also seen in our laboratory customer survey. Customers and healthcare personnel have been actively informed about the increased availability.

“Before the summer, 48% of our customers in HUS laboratories booked an appointment. Currently, already 56–57% book an appointment. Clearly, we have been able to increase the number of booked appointments in a short time, says Nurse Director Tuija Ohranen.

There will be a boost to the appointment availability in the fall, and more evening and weekend times will be made available. The aim is to always have appointments available for the same or the following day.

“The morning rush can be avoided by booking an appointment for the afternoon. Fasting before providing a sample is rarely necessary anymore, so evening appointments are a good option. Before you book an appointment, you need to have a doctor’s referral for the tests”, Ohranen explains.

Online booking is the easiest way to book an appointment to the laboratory of your choice (huslab.fi/booking). Appointments can be booked by phone as well. Urgent sampling will continue to operate on a queue number system.

“Some of our laboratories serve by appointment only. That is why it is best to check the HUS website (hus.fi/en/laboratories) to see the laboratory’s opening hours and if they offer walk-in sampling. Picking up and returning sample containers is always possible also in laboratories that serve by appointment only.”

Ohranen believes that the system with booked appointments benefits everyone: “Customers don’t need to wait, our operations are more manageable, our employees are happier, and infection prevention in our premises is better.

HUS: Those infected with COVID-19 can now report potentially infected people

A text message is sent to anyone who has received a positive COVID-19 test result. The message includes instructions to report any exposed persons in the MyCovidData.fi service. The service is used in the HUS area in all municipalities except Helsinki. Helsinki has its own system for reporting exposures.

‘The information provided in the service is useful preliminary information for infection tracers and speeds up the traceability process. The service can be used to report any locations the infected person has visited, and to write the names and telephone numbers of the people who have been exposed, as well as any other information related to the exposure’, says Deputy Chief Physician Eeva Ruotsalainen.

When the data is registered before an infection tracer calls, the data can be reviewed together and supplemented as necessary. The infection tracer confirms the exposures.

Using the service requires strong identification with online banking credentials or a mobile certificate. It is also possible to use the service on behalf of another person.

The service is now available in Finnish. Swedish and English versions of the service will soon be opened. In addition to municipalities in the HUS area, the service can be introduced in the areas of Kymote, Eksote and Northern Ostrobothnia Hospital Districts.

The address of the service is MyCovidData.fi.

HR intern Marikka Silvonen describes Sipoo as fresh and feels her internship has cemented, that her choice of career was indeed right

Text and picture:
Kristian Meurman

Whole processes

As in most of the work environments in the Municipality of Sipoo, also the HR section aims at providing a look-out post for interns and a possibility to participate in the entity of processes. For HR intern Marikka Silvonen, this has meant being a part of the recruiting process all the way from writing the application text to actually employing.

-It has been great to be a part of the job interviews and in making preliminary arrangements for employment, Marikka Silvonen says.

The municipality sector is a very multifaceted employer

One of the most important missions for the HR Section, is to seek and recruit the workforce that the municipality needs, and this process begins with publishing the information about open positions.

-There are an incredible number of different position titles in the national municipal recruiting portal, when looking at it, you can really see how vast the municipal sector is, Silvonen says.

The municipality employs many different experts, from teachers to health nurses and from park area caretakers to IT specialists.

-It has been extra rewarding to participate in recruiting processes, where for instance high profile leaders or medical doctors have been employed. Luckily, all expert questions are at the discretion of supervisors, but I have learned to trust my own intuition too, for instance in interpreting what a certain sentence from the interviewee actually means in an interview situation, Silvonen describes.

Her own handprint also in the upcoming staff strategy

As an intern, Silvonen has gained access to all HR functions and been made a part of the team in several ways. Through this, she was also part of the planning group together with municipal officials for the future staff strategy for the Municipality of Sipoo.

-We experimented in small groups with three different strategy options, that was very interesting, Silvonen tells.

I am in the right field!

Silvonen describes, that the internship in Sipoo has clarified her feeling about her choice of career and direction in her studies.

-During my internship, I have been able to make use of many things I have learned at school, this in turn has amplified my vision, that I really am in the right field, the Municipality of Sipoo’s HR intern, who also studies work environment development besides her main subject, community pedagogics, at the Humanistic University of Applied Sciences.

Gain for both the municipality and the intern herself

In the recruiting processes for the Municipality of Sipoo, Marikka Silvonen appreciates, that the choice of intern is not based for instance on best scores or how far a student has completed his/her studies.

-When the Municipality of Sipoo employs, the choice of person for an internship is based on mutual gain. This internship of mine is also a part of my studies, therefore from the municipality’s point of view, it was seen how big a benefit this internship would be for me. I appreciate this very much, because the municipality could easily have just chosen someone who just finished his/her studies, or at least a student who would have progressed further in his/her studies. But here in Sipoo things are seen differently – also the intern should gain as much as possible from his/her own internship period, Silvonen explains.

The Municipality of Sipoo is fresh, diverse and warm

When asked how she would describe the Municipality of Sipoo as a workplace, Silvonen’s first choice of word is: fresh.

-I can’t really open that up more, but all information is somehow so easily accessible for instance through the intranet, or the administrative regulations and the layout of the intranet system is somehow very pleasant. And I love it how there can be experts with over 30 years of work experience, who welcome a newcomer like me. This is a small community, but very warm and caring, Marikka Silvonen describes.

I have previously been employed at another municipality, and compared to Sipoo, it feels somewhat old fashioned now, Silvonen says.

-In Sipoo, the municipality is evolving, which can be seen in the development of the work positions and the functions, all in all, Sipoo seems very willing to renew, Marikka Silvonen describes.

Summer has gone by in terms of working, but soon it is time for vacation

The Municipality of Sipoo’s HR intern Marikka Silvonen has not benefited of the warm summer days during the weeks, but when the internship is over, there will be a three-week vacation, before returning to her studies.

-It does feel needed, I benefited of one prolonged weekend during the summer, when we celebrated both my birthday and the birthday of one of my relatives, whose festivities had already been postponed five times, due to the corona virus, Silvonen laughs.

The best thing is that the intern’s opinion is appreciated, and the only defect is restrictions due to the corona virus

-Although I have been an intern, I have experienced that my opinion has been appreciated and my sayings have mattered in different situations, this has been very gratifying. The only thing I have missed a little, is the feeling of working together and seeing people face-to-face, but this has been a reality everywhere now due to the corona virus, Silvonen says.

Otherwise, the opportunity to work from a distance gains praise too. Because Silvonen lives in Helsinki and does not own a car, the opportunity to work from home has been a good surplus.

-But, on the other hand, contrary to original plans, I have had the opportunity to use a car during this summer, so I have enjoyed coming into the office to work at times too, Silvonen tells.

Students: don’t lose your faith with your applications and dare to look farther

As somewhat of an expert in recruiting processes already now, Silvonen knows, that some of the most popular internship positions for instance in the capital area, can have incredibly many applications. Even if an internship position would not be available close by, you’d better not lose faith and even if you have to send several applications, you will eventually find your spot.

-I have experienced as an applicant myself, that for instance for some internship possibility in Helsinki there were over 120 applications for just one vacancy. But there is nothing forcing you to get your internship position in Helsinki, I had a friend who hinted me about this position in Sipoo and I have learned, that it is worth the effort to look a little farther and also send applications for positions you might think that are beyond your reach – you might end up with a happy surprise, Silvonen tips.

Studies go on, but Sipoo is not forgotten

When inquired about work possibilities and whether Silvonen could imagine working in the municipal sector in the future, the answer comes like out of the barrel of a gun:

-Absolutely! I could easily see myself in Sipoo or some other municipality. I have learned that it is definitely not a must to live and work within the same city or municipality. On the other hand, I could easily see myself also living in Sipoo, The Municipality of Sipoo’s HR intern for the summer of 2021 Marikka Silvonen concludes.

Joensuun tila is an oasis for travellers

A family business with a long history

In charge of Joensuun tila is Lotta Kuosmanen, whose family has owned the estate for generations. Lotta Kuosmanen’s great grandfather, Nobel prize winner A.I. Virtanen purchased the estate in the 1930’s. Originally, the estate was a traditional farming estate, but Lotta Kuosmanen’s father, Martti Virtanen begun the transformation from farm to travel and amusement services. The estate now offers services for day guests and long-term residents alike. Lotta Kuosmanen continues in her father’s footsteps and has continued to evolve the services to better suit the needs of modern-day travellers.

A camper’s paradise

The caravan park is spread over a vast area and houses 40 spots, of which 32 are electrified. Most of the Joensuun tila camper van and trailer guests are long-term residents, but there are quite a few spots that can be reserved for just one or a few nights. However, since the caravan park is quite popular, it might be a good idea to telephone in advance to make sure there is a free spot waiting for one’s arrival.

Private sauna, laundry room, kitchenette and children’s playground

The services for campers are many: you can book a barrel shaped sauna for your private use for a very modest fee, and in addition you can benefit from the laundry room and kitchen area, which are at your disposal for the price of your overnight spot. In addition to a washer, there is also a dryer and in the kitchen facility you can cook simple meals, if you want. There is a table-top stove, a microwave oven, a toaster and a coffee maker.

Tents are welcome too

If you do not have your own residential vehicle or trailer, you can also camp in a tent. For bigger tents you can even opt for a spot with electricity, should there be any of these available.

Joensuun tila's caravan park.
There is a total of 40 spots for campers, of which 32 are supplied with electricity. Camping is also allowed for a small fee. All campers can benefit from a variety of services. Residential vehicle and trailer spots are rentable both with long-term agreements and for single night stays.

Hotel accommodations and restaurant services through co-operation

The company behind the Joensuun tila estate, Joensuun Tila Oy, also functions as a landlord for the vast area’s other operators, to which are included Villa Sibbe and Musical Children’s Day Care Center Poco. There are also quite a few rental appartments for long-term residents on the premises and the Finnish speaking theater group Sipoon Teatteri organises theatre shows at Joensuun Tila’s outdoor stage.

Villa Sibbe and Café Sibbe – accommodation, lunch restaurant and a fully licensed summer café

Suomi Sisters Oy is the company behind Villa Sibbe, that offers hotel standard accommodation in its six boutique hotel rooms. Depending on the room, there are beds for two to three persons. The building of Villa Sibbe itself, is Nobel prize winner A. I. Virtanen’s estate’s former main building, so you can really feel the history in this house! Villa Sibbe also houses a lunch restaurant, which is open to all guests, hotel residents and drop-in customers alike.

Adjacent to the boat harbour, there is a summer café, which is fully licensed. In addition to beverages, Café Sibbe serves salty snacks and for instance ice cream.

Hotel and Restaurant Villa Sibbe is operated by Suomi Sisters Oy and is situated in the Nobel prize winner’s former main building.

Sporting activities or just chilling on the beach

Joensuun tila’s main curiosity is certainly the swimming lake that was built upon commission of Martti Virtanen. The big artificial lake is filled with water from the estate’s well and is thus certainly free from cyano bacteria, which can be somewhat a problem in the lakes and seas during very hot summers. The water quality is above the demands of EU standard swimming beaches and impurities in the water are fought simply by changing the water often enough.

At the shore of the swimming lake, there are also benches and tables for eating your own picknick and there are several fire pits for your barbecue moments. Firewood can be bought at Joensuun tila’s reception.

The huge disc golf course welcomes everyone from hobbyists to competitors

Joensuun tila’s competition level disc golf course is arguably Sipoo’s finest and the different courses have been built according to different themes. Some themes might seem familiar from children’s books. The courses are demanding enough for professionals, but there are also great options for beginners too. It is not uncommon that competitions are arranged, but usually the course is free to use just for fun. Should you not yet have your own frisbees, you can rent some from Joensuun tila. The track is maintained by Sibbe Disc Golf and playing a round costs 6 euros. You must also book a tee time through Sibbe Disc Golf.

Sibbe Disc Golf's disc golf track in the forest by Joensuun tila.
No hard work has been spared in building the disc golf courses and different courses have their own themes. The entire course is professional level, but there are also easier courses for beginners. The course encircles the entire estate area.

Mini golf and beach volley

The newest addition to Joensuun tila’s passtimes is the mini golf course, which is also operated by Sibbe Disc Golf and is situated right next to the entrance and reception. In addition, there is a beach volleyball course next to the swimming lake, you can also book weekly times to it.

To the river or the sea with muscle force or with the help of an engine

Joensuun tila rents kayaks and you have the choice between traditional ones and competition kayaks. Both categories are available as single or dual versions. From the harbour, you can paddle either left up-streams along the Sipoo river towards Nikkilä, or to the right towards Sipoo delta and the archipelago that opens directly behind it. You can easily paddle all the way to open sea.

If bobbing in a kayak does not sound like your cup of tea, you can always opt for a rowing boat. And if rowing sound too tiring, you can use the outboord engine to take you to the archipelago. The rental price of the rowing boat includes a small container of gasoline, which will easily get you around fifteen kilometers of uninterrupted driving. In the rental price are of course also included safety equipment, such as life vests and a sea chart for safe navigation.

View from a kayak at Sipoo bay, with archipelago and another kayak.
You can rent a kayak or a rowing boat from Joensuun tila and get acquainted with both the sea and the Sipoo river.

Beach relaxing with just a parking fee

If you don’t feel like doing anything extra, you can obviously just benefit of the swimming lake’s cooling water on a hot summer day, in a beautiful place, where the slowly flowing Sipoo river turns into a bay. The river itself is a delight to the eye. There is no entrance fee to the swimming lake, or any of the other areas at Joensuun tila, you get to benefit from everything with just the parking fee. Parking costs one euro per hour and can be paid either with a mobile application or by card.

Skippers welcome too

Even if the majority of Joensuun tila’s marina is reserved for long-term boat customers, there are a few guest spots too. At least there should be mooring space for daytime visitors, but if you want to stay for a longer time, it might be a good idea to call in advance and make sure there is a free place by the pier for you.

Hints, maps and tips from the reception

Right next to the parking area, the reception of Joensuun tila offers hints and tips to travellers and you can also pick up maps which will come handy if you want to navigate the waters. The friendly staff will also help you to find the most interesting sights to see.

Reception of Joensuun tila.
All necessary information can be found at the reception, and this is also the place where caravan park guests are supposed to register. The reception is open daily during summer.
