Pupils and their guardians are encouraged to contact teachers and pupil welfare personnel (school curator, school psychologist and school nurse) in all questions about the pupil’s welfare and learning. Issues that give concern may be for example learning and difficulties in learning, the pupil’s relations to others, bullying, changing life situations in the family or different kinds of crisis. There are no topics too big or small to be discussed – it is important that you’re not left alone with your worries!
Pupil welfare refers to actions taken to ensure that the pupils have possibilities to engage in their studies properly, to have good mental and physical health, and to enjoy a good social wellbeing. All persons working at the school are responsible for pupil welfare, and pupil welfare is carried out in good cooperation with the pupils’ homes.
Pupil welfare is carried out primarily as preventive, collective pupil welfare that supports the school. In other words, we develop the well-being of the entire school community and all of the pupils, and take care of school safety, healthiness and comfort. Each school has a collective work group for pupil welfare.
Pupils may receive help and support from a school nurse, school curator or a school psychologist. If the pupil is provided help by several professionals, they may set up a multi-professional expert group with the pupil’s consent.

To whom and on what terms
Pupils have a statutory right to individual pupil welfare, consisting of school health care services, pupil welfare psychologist and curator services, and multidisciplinary pupil welfare services directed to individual pupils when needed. Individual pupil welfare is always based on the pupil’s, and when necessary, also the guardian’s, consent. However, guardians do not have the right to forbid their children from using student welfare services. Issues discussed during individual pupil welfare appointments are confidential, and the work is carried out according to the rules and regulations on disclosure of information and secrecy.
Whenever pupils express their wish to have a personal discussion with a psychologist or a curator, a discussion time must be arranged within seven establishment workdays counted from the day when the pupil asked for a discussion. In acute situations, the discussion has to be organized during the same day or the following day. The urgency of the matter is assessed by a professional pupil welfare employee. Pupils are to be given a possibility for a personal discussion also if their guardian asks for it.

Basic information and legislation
The pupils in pre-primary and basic education are entitled to pupil welfare services. It means looking after the pupils’ physical, psychological and social well-being. Pupil welfare services promote the pupils’ balanced growth and development and ensure everyone’s equal possibilities for learning. The objective of pupil welfare is to notice and intervene in the pupils’ problems as early as possible.
Pupil welfare services include the school health service and the activities of a school social worker and a school psychologist. The teachers and all other school staff members also participate in pupil welfare.
A pupil welfare group operates in all schools, led by the representative nominated by the education organizer. The group’s task is to plan, implement and develop pupil welfare in the school community so that all children can have a healthy, safe and accessible school environment.
